Agricultural farm surveying is the process of estimating and mapping the position, height, size and boundary of agricultural farm.

Agricultural farm planning is the process of outlining (lay-out) the farm strip and organizing the farm lay out for proper usage without the risk of farming land degradation.

Importance of agricultural farm surveying:

• It helps to know the size of farm land and cultivated land

• It helps in feasibility studies

• It enables the farmers to make proper use of the land under different farming system

• Farmers can be easily determines the proper site and location for particular farm enterprises or structures within minutes

• It also gives security over the land.

• It also helps in several practices of agriculture such as for stabilization of irrigation channel or drainage channel etc.

Surveying Equipment

• Ranging pole

• Arrow or pin

• Gunter’s chain

• Measuring tape

• Prismatic compass

• Theodolite

Maintenance of surveying equipment

• Cleaning and drying the properly all surveying equipment after use or before storage

• Grease the metal tips regularly if needed

• Paint if necessary

• Repair and service the necessary equipment at regularly interval as per need

• Sharpen blunt edges regularly

Farm strip:

Farm strip is a piece of land where farm buildings and structures are located.

Factors to be considered during farm strip planning:

• Climatic factors

• Topographic factor

• Nature of the soil, soil types and water supply

• The farm strip must be accessible for ease transportation and carriage of materials in and out of the farm.

• When you planned the agricultural farm surveying some economic factors is also to be considered such as availability of capital, profit and the cost

Principles of farm layout

For a feasible Agricultural farm planning, curtain conditions should be considered i.e.-

• Office buildings should be located distant from animal pens and processing unit.

• Crops should be cultivated on fertile land and building on infertile land

• Always avoid the erosion prone areas

• The farm must be accessible.
